About

Nilsagar Dighi (a large pond) is located in the Dhopadanga *mauza* of Gorgram Union, within the Sadar Upazila, 14.5 kilometers northwest of Nilphamari district town. It covers a total area of 53.90 acres, with the main water body spanning 32.70 acres. It is estimated to have been excavated sometime around the 8th century. According to Hindu scriptures, during the Kurukshetra War—which took place between the 8th and 9th centuries BCE—King Virata supported the Pandavas, while King Bhagadatta sided with the Kauravas. Following a game of dice, the defeated Pandavas were compelled to go into exile for twelve years. They chose a location within King Virata’s realm—specifically *Gogriha* (believed to be present-day Gorgram)—as their place of voluntary exile. King Virata had this vast pond excavated to quench the thirst of the Pandavas. Over time, the name *Virata Dighi* evolved through linguistic shifts into "Birata Dighi," then "Biltadi Dighi," and eventually "Binna Dighi." In 1979, the then-Sub-Divisional Administrator, Mr. A. Jabbar, undertook the renovation of the pond with the aim of developing it into a tourist destination and renamed it "Nilsagar." The depth of the water is 23 feet in the center (during the June–October period) and 4 feet near the banks.
